Malang – Access to renewable energy education in Indonesia is still limited. Moreover, renewable energy is one of the policies that almost the entire country will take to mitigate the impact of the future climate crisis, including Indonesia.
Aware of this problem, GAWIREA, an organization focused on renewable energy education for women, especially in rural areas, launched a workshop for young people in Malang, East Java, on Friday (June 5th).
Set at MCC Malang, this workshop uses the name Net Zero Hero, hoping that all participants will be heroes to contribute to reducing zero emissions in the future.
Malang is selected for being one of the best educational centers in Indonesia. This first face-to-face workshop of Net Zero Hero raised the theme of Climate Crisis Reality and the Imperative for a Just Energy Transition, with a total of 13 participants.
“I’m excited and the workshop was very fun. It’s just about the first workshop (Net Zero Hero) in Malang. It’s very exciting from the games, the presentations, and the material,” said Christine, one of the participants from Brawijaya University.
Unlike the general workshops that focus only on one-way learning from the maker, the Net Zero Hero workshops have fun learning concepts wrapped in simulations.
Opened with a connectivity session for all participants to get to know each other, the session was continued by Climate Resilience Simulation where all participants understood the issues of resilience and climate adaptation through a poker card game.
“It’s the first time I’ve been to a workshop that doesn’t just contain material, it’s more interesting here,” said Zidan, who is also from Brawijaya University.
After that, the event continued with a renewable energy simulation session, where participants looked at how to meet off and on the grid. The final session was Net Zero Hero Tools, where all participants engaged in a simulation of how a country is implementing climate action or climate policy, and taking action against a disaster that could affect action plans.
